Last week, my favorite kitty started ailing, suddenly. With cats, they'll be fine one day, and then the next, almost overnight, they are suddenly ill, and that was him. Last weekend he was fine, last Tuesday he had an extended abdomen and muscle wasting on his hips. No one knows for sure why they show no illness until it's too late when they are really ill, but it makes treating them hard to do, because by the time you know they're sick, the disease/illness is so far along, you usually can't do anything but say goodbye.
Unfortunately, it's not something he can get better from. .it's either heart failure or cancer. . .the vet wasn't very optomistic due to how fast he has gone downhill, so is not encouraging me to spend a lot of money just to 'know' what he's sick of. . .he did do an ultrasound, and heart looks normal, but there is so much ascites(liquid in his abdomen), they couldn't get a look at his other organs to see if there were any tumours. He's so weak, exploratory surgery is out, and I'd hate to have him die on the table. I'd rather he passed at home, or in my arms, not on a cold table.
So, it's just a guess, just like when I lost Schatzi the same way, fine one day, suddenly ill the next.
So it's just a waiting game. ..
Up until yesterday, he was being better than past cats(which total 5 I've had to forcefeed) in letting me put food in the back of his mouth and swallowing it. Today not so patient and nice, wanting nothign to do with the chicken I made him, tho he did eat 1/2+ of a can of fancy feast today while I was at work. . problem is, he should be eating about 4 of those a day
Unfortunately with cats, going off their food will kill them faster than just about anything, due to 'fatty liver disease'.(feline hepatic lipidosis) which causes liver failure. . .so you have to forcefeed them. . .it's not a fun game of making a sick cat eat. . .babyfood is the easiest as it can go thru the syringe easier and is a lot less messy than trying to puree cat food into a nice thin mess. I more often than not get more food on me than in the cat, and hate it, hate spendng the last few days/weeks with an ailing pet fighting them. It's hard enough letting them go, watching them get weaker, without remembering how you fought with them.
Unfortunately, the PC world has encroached into the cat world, and if you tell many 'feel good' cat people you are forcefeeding, they ahve conniptions, they prefer the gentler term 'assisted feeding'. . this isn't a child or older relative that has problems hitting their mouth, you are making an animal eat, forcing them to do something they would rather not due, yet they get soooo damn pissy if you point that out. .and I refuse to use the words 'assisted feeding', when I know what i'm doing is forcing them to eat, even if it's for their own good.
And BOY do they get uptight if you refuse to use their PC words "asissted feeding". . I guess it's their way of making themselves feel better for doing something not so nice. . but I'm sorry, a spade's a spade. .cat has no desire to eat, you're forcing it. Why do people have to fancy up things instead of just being honest with themselves??
it sucks. .treasure is my boy, he's only 8. . this is the 4th in the last 15 months. .and he's nto that old, barely 8 yrs old. .. he stepped into the hole Schatzi left back in 2002. It's only a matter of days really, but as long as he enjoys having his ears scritched and plays with the ribbons on a racing blanket I have in the room, we'll keep going, but my pillow will be so empty when it finally is time
Where quality not quantity matters
Where color is immaterial and gorgeous hounds fly.

dealing with puppy buyers
Dealing with puppy buyers can be rewarding, but it can also be a big PITA. . .some puppy buyers are real accomodating, listen to what you have to say, some think they know it all, and have no problem telling you that. .
Over 15 yrs in Borzoi, I've come to terms that many show people/puppy buyers are nuts. . .and much prefer selling my pups to pet homes where they'll be loved and adored, no matter if they end up missing 5 teeth, have a gay tail or a bad bite. . .all they care about is that the puppy fits their household and has a wonderful temperament. Soo unlike the revolving door of the show dog world.
Some of the asinine reasons I've heard for returning dogs from show homes just make me want to scream. . there was the beautiful white & red bitch that I would've stole in a haertbeat, that was returned because she 'looked too much like Kennel X", another self black & tan bitch who was returned a year later because the show person didn't like black. . hunh?
A recent interaction with a 'show' person reiterated to me how much I hate dealing with show homes. . .not that I will turn away a good show home that'll keep a puppy forever. . but you have no idea if that show home will be such at first. . not unless they've proven themselves to you. And in 8 litters, I've had 2 puppies returned to me, and I think part of it is because of my hatred of placing in show homes.
This person contacted me earlier this year, in like Feb, asking about Chrissy, a few emails back and forth, then she disappeared. . I'm used to that, so I just blew it off, and went on with life. You can't take it personally when homes looking at puppies do that, it happens. They flake out, go elsewhere, change their mind, whatever. I can deal with that.
Suddenly she reappeared, asking if she was still available, a few emails, then wham, disappeared. I saw her at the Nationals, she didn't inquire on Chrissy, so once again, I blew it off. . .
Few weeks later, I get an email, can I stop by and see them? I really like Chrissy, blah blah blah. . sure, set up a time, came home and met with her, introduced her to the pups, spent quite a bit of time that evening with her, she fell in love with Aurora, really liked her, blah blah blah, granted I thought and still think Chrissy is the better bitch, but hey. . and as we headed back to the house, she dropped a bomb shell in my lap.
"I like her, but I kind of am in line for a pup out of Breeder Y's litter, not sure if I want one, I don't like the colour, but. . "
Wait a minute here. . .this should've been stated first thing. . IMHO. . There's just no way I'd go to a breeder's house, waste their time and then go oh well, your litter is my back up plan. . it's rude.
Whatever. . she left, swearing she'd make a decision in a few weeks.
Again, heard nothing from her, tho she talked to the cobreeder and a friend of mine. Figured she'd made her decision. . .whatever. . .that doesn't bother me. .
And then, again, she pops out of nowhere, "I'd like to stop by next week and see her again". Ok, fine, whatever. .but again all I heard of was how much she loved Breeder Y's puppies parents, balh blah blah. I dropped her an email and told her it seemed she'd already made up her mind, there was no need to stop by and see Aurora. . I'd rather she be in a home who loved her for her. .first love, not by whimsy, and I don't hear the same things coming out of her mouth about Aurora and her family. That's ok, there's plenty of types of Borzoi. She never responded to that email
Except she ends up calling and cancelling, didn't get out of her summer home when she'd plan, blah blah blah "let's make it tomorrow". Ok. . .at this point, I've about had enough, I feel like I've been ran thru a ringer by this person. . .the next day, she calls. . .now, she has to deal with Friday rush hour traffic to come see me, IMHO, wouldn't you leave early AM if you plan on meeting someone, to insure you get there in time? Already realised she wasn't serious, have no clue why she kept stringing me along. . .my two friends kept saying 'she's a wonderful home', yeah, but not sure I want to deal with this type of crap for the life of a dog.
She calls again, says she's not going to make it (Well duh, I'd already figured that out), but that she'd think seriously about which pup she wanted on the way home. . .later that night, I get a call "i've decided to go with the boy'.
I wasn't angry, I was frustrated, and just sick of dealing with this person. . .sick of being screwed around with and sick of being lied to. . maybe she didn't lie to me, but lying by ommission is still lying to me. . .maybe she didn't mean to run me thru the ringer and screw around with me, but that's sure how she left me feeling.
Hope her baby boy turns out, despite what breeders tell you, there's little you can tell about if the dog is truly going to be show quality until all teeth come in and the bite settles. . .so much can happen, ask the lady who spent $1500 to import a puppy from sweden only to be missing SEVEN teeth. Her replacement puppy ended up having mismatched rear angles(one side straighter than the other) I had a puppy who was beautiful as a puppy, angles to die for, who grew up missing those angles. .
Buying babies as a show dog is a huge crap shoot.
If you want a show pup, buy an older pup. . .unless you have no problem putting a bunch of money and time into growing out a puppy to adulthood, training it, working with it, vetting it only to find out it's not show quality, at which point you either return the puppy to the breeder(if you have a limit law in your area) and get a replacement, neuter it and get another dog(if your'e not at your limit), or just neuter it and be done with showing (if you are at your limit), that's assuming your contract covers any of this.
Yes, it means more work if you get an older pup and have smaller dogs/cats in the household. . .but it's doable. My current setup the puppies don't interact with the cats, but the pups I kept have been introduced to the cats and ignore them. . . but it's really no more work than what you have to do bringing a young puppy in. You cant' just throw them and your other pets together at any time, it takes work.
Buying older doesn't make things written in stone either, you can still ruin a puppy you get as an older pup. . lack of exercise or improper exercise are just two ways you can do that. But at least you have a BETTER IDEA
And remember, 'show quality' at 8-12 wks just mean it has a good bite and both balls(if it's a boy). Our breed doesn't have breed DQ's beyond both testicles, so as long as they have both, there are breeders who call everything in the litter as 'show quality'. You can't tell anything about that age, IMHO. . I've seen dogs grow up and totally fall apart, and those who looked horrid at that age who grew up to be gorgeous specimens.
And most important: BE HONEST with the breeder from day 1. .don't dick them around, don't string them along. . .this incident was ridiculous.
This entire instance left a bad taste in my mouth about dealing with show homes. I now understand why breeders are termed as short/rude if they've had multiple instances with these type of buyers it could make someone jaded and not willing to talk with someone unless they are serious. .
Between this and the local nitwit who despite numerous breeders trying to help her, keeps buying from puppymills, then complaining about the dogs and then getting upset if you agreed with the fautls of the dog. . . Plenty of breeders (not me, I have enough headaches) in the area have offered her a show quality puppy, but she nitpicks them(not white enough, doesn't have a blaze, doesn't talk to her, etc, etc, etc). . .it all makes me want to scream
Not to say all puppy buyers are bad or wishy washy. . .every one of my puppies has gone into a great home, with great owners, even if the puppies had their 'issues', they worked with and dealt with them. . and love them. .but 99% of the ones I've sold have gone to pet homes, some are pet homes who dabble in showing or running, but these are homes that lvoe the dog, no matter what. .. and that's what I love about them.
So to all those wonderful homes my pups are living in: THANK YOU!!!
Not to say I don't have a few show homes lined up for Gossip's litter. . .but these are long time people who've got a track record of keeping dogs who don't turn out. . .if they're as nice as I expect them to be, Bonnie & I have no problem growing them out until the right home comes along.

KC policies
The days are going too darn fast for me to keep up. I start a blog post, and then don't finish it.
After the weekend from hell(details to get posted soon as I can), I came home Monday, to find Gossip in season
A year ago, I wouldn't've cared so much, BUT
She wasn't supposed to be in til 5/22
I'd just sunk money into three different rally shows entries in the next month, and she'll be out BARELY before the nationals.
Thankfully one show hadn't closed yet, so cancelled that one, but the first one is nonrefundable for seasons
WTF?
In this day and age, when it's harder and harder to have unaltered dogs, i can NOT believe our PEERS have the gal to punish those of us who wish to compete with well bred unaltered girls. I did not enter this show with the thought she'd come into season so early. Why the heck would clubs, many of whom are suffering for money as it is due to entries being down, have such a stupid rule?
We are being pushed by our county and government all over the US to spay and neuter or dogs, being fined or caused to purchase expensive unaltered dog licenses. . .to have our own Kennel Clubs install such a ruling just adds insult to injury.
I truly don't understand this asinine rule, set by the clubs, not the superintendant, and I Wrote the club(Baltimore Kennel KC) and voiced my anger, politely, over this policy, as well as informed them I would be boycotting their OB/Rally events from now on unless they changed their policy, and that I would be encouraging everyone I know to do the same. It's been four days, haven't heard back from them, Plan on stopping by their club table tomorrow and asking them about this policy.
And since I have two boys in training, yep, who aren't affected by seasons, I will stand by that thought, even if it means missing judges I want to show under. There is no reason to support a club with this type of policy, and until they change it, they will not see my money. . .am going to bring this up at our (PVBC's) next meeting, as a 'do we really want to support a club who doesn't support unaltered girls?". . as our supported entry is this weekend
This is ludicrious. I could totally understand not refunding all of it, but to not refund most of it is BS.
So, be careful when you enter events, double check to see if refunds are given. . if they're not, write the clubs in protest. .. We can't substitute another dog, so we should get a partial refund at least. Andi f you're a member of a kennel club, please make sure they allow refunds for unaltered girls, require a drs note if you want, but give refunds.
Wellbred bitches are the future of our breeds, if we all spayed our girls, breeds would die off in 5-10 yrs. .. then where would we be?
bitches, got to love them, but boy am I sooo frustrated. Why, Gossip, Why?!?!?!

AKC
OMG, the sky is falling
Or so some rabid members of the dog show community would have us think
What has their panties in such a bind?
AKC is allowing mutts to enter performance events. Yes, you can now enter Muttsie into Rally, Agility or Obedience.
OMG! How horrible. . NOT. .
They are required to be altered. Good for them. They will only be allowed in those events. Good for AKC. . .personally, I think this is a great step in bringing the pet population into the fold. What great PR for AKC, even mutts are allowed.
Purebred enthusiasts have been seen as elitist, this shows that we are not. . that all dogs are welcomed. Maybe Bobby or Katie will see famous Agility dog Ch Get Er Done OTCH on Animal planet, look at Mopsy who's chewing on a wire and think "we can do that". . .a well trained dog is a good dog, and less likely to be dumped at the shelter. . one of the biggest reasons for dumpage at our local shelter is the teenage 50+ lb dog who is out of control for lack of training. Anything that encourages training of the family pet gets both thumbs up.
In this day and age, we dog enthusiasts need all the friends we can get to battle the ridiculous legislation that comes thru. A lot if not most of the normal pet population has no clue how this can affect them down the road. This gives us a chance to educate them, to bring them into our folds and show them what is happening. We need to stand together against the ARA's. . and by telling them they're not good enough to do OB/Rally/Agility next to our purebreds is NOT the way to go about it!
This also allows more moeny to go into club & AKC coffers without either entity having to yank up fees anymore than they are. It also brings more warm bodies into a club, where msot clubs have an aging population. I am the youngest in my breed club, which is sad, I'm 38, most are in their 50s+. Clubs often complain about not having enough people to work an event, by allowing owners of mutts in, it brings more workers in. Win/Win!
What's ironic is some of the biggest(loudest) opponents of this, are people who don't even DO anything but show. . .wtf does it matter to them?
The attitude is very reminiscent of the way some whites were years ago, not wanting people of colour to intermix with them. .. very much the 'they're not good enough', they're not pure(white) enough. . It's rather sickening to tell you the truth.
i've had mutts, I prefer my purebreds. . but I have no issues with them if they want to come play on the same OB/RAlly/Agility field we do. . I welcome them with open arms. If they beat us, so be it. . but then,I'm not ultra competitive. .. we play in the rally ring, I dont' care if we place or not, long as we pass ;)

i've had mutts, I prefer my purebreds. . but I have no issues with them if they want to come play on the same OB/RAlly/Agility field we do. . I welcome them with open arms. If they beat us, so be it. . but then,I'm not ultra competitive. .. we play in the rally ring, I dont' care if we place or not, long as we pass ;)

fort hood
I usually don't use my blog to rant on things non doggy, but recent activities in the news has just gotten my dander up.
I am a military brat. My father was in the Airforce, his mother was in the marines, his step father was military, my Step father retired from the Airforce. My sister was a marine, my brother wanted to be in the AF so bad but couldn't because of health reasons. I never joined, cuz I don't deal well with dick heads telling me when to jump, how high to jump LOl
This jack ass who joined the military, Nidal Malik (no, I'm not goign to call him by his rank, he doesn't DESERVE his rank!) KNOWING there was a possibility of going to war, and then getting upset and going on a shooting spree should be hung by his balls from the nearest tree.
People like him and those who go AWOL cuz they can't get out of going to war really piss me off
What kind of MORON joins the military and then gets upset when they get deployed to a war. WTF do you think the military is for? Plant flowers and kiss booboos? Give me a freaking break. They want the benefits, but they don't want the work that has to go with that free education, and when faced with the scary task of going to war, they become giant babies.
My step father was deployed quite a bit to this useless war Bush and his predecessors started. I am so glad he's now retired and has no chance of being recalled to duty, as yes, it was hard, but we were proud of him, and we supported him and wouldn't've asked him to skip out on his responsibility.
I personally, wish they had killed Malik. .. he doesn't deserve any better. . how dare he go in and shoot innocent bystanders, who had nothing to do with his inability to get out of his job, his responsibilities. . so many families devastated because of this idiot. I have no sympathy for him. . .every time i hear his name, I see red. This moron got his medical training PAID for by the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and he repays us by shooting our citizens. Unfortuantely, rotting in jail is too good for him.
If you don't want to go to war, don't join the military. It's that easy.
This type of crap just gets to me. .. it's a slap in the face of every military person who ever stepped into battle, whether they wanted to or not, because they were proud to serve their country. . .it's unfreaking believable that some asinine moron would join the Armed Forces, and then get angry because they were required to do their job.
To any military reading this: hats off to you. I'm proud of you, and what you do. . I may not support the war or the decisions that lead you there, but I support YOU!!!
And to those affected by these atrocity. My heart and thoughts are with you. . .

Vets
Not all vets are created equal. Some think their crap don't stink, others are more modest and willing to learn, and others are worth their weight in gold. I've met some that fit in all the criteria.
Timmy's a very sweet, calm puppy. He is just like his namesack: doesn't jump before he thinks and very thoughtful, not a spazz like Tony LOL.He has the perfect personality to be a therapy dog, which is why he was sold to this home, his future is as a therapy dog for autistic kids.
Timmy's new owner took him to a vet close to the house. It's a 24 hr vet, so it was convenient and she figured it'd be nice to have background there if he ever needed an ER vet. . .the experience left A LOT to be desired.
Before he left my hands, he visited my vet, he was checked over, heart listened to long and hard, and got a clean bill of health, wormed, weighed, etc, etc. I was told he was in good condition.
This vet jumped all over Timmy's poor mom, first for him being 'too thin', telling her you should never be able to feel the hipbones or ribs on a dog. . um, with a sighthound, if you can't, they are FAT!!!
Then there had to be something wrong with this puppy, cuz he wasn't an obnoxious jumpy brat. No, he's a puppy who's had his breeder work hard with him to be a good puppy on leash, a puppy who's been coursing, racing, to vets, pet stores and out about in an attempt to civilize the little beast. I remember his Uncle Obie & Uncle Bob falling asleep at my feet while we waited for Bob's checkup LOL A dog who is sure of themselves is not going to freak out at the vet's. . And a well trained puppy is going to act like a well trained puppy not an unruly beast.
Then it was well obviously your breeder doesn't know what she's talking about, this isn't normal. . had poor Timmy's mom all upset. Then she got derogatory because of Timmy's age. Cuz he was soo old (7 months) obviously he isn't from a good breeder. Sorry lady, not all of us sell our puppies at 4 wks and shoot them out the door ASAP.
She kept telling TImmy's mom there was something horribly wrong with Timmy because he was too thin and not acting 'normal'. But gave her no hints of what it was, just took $300 did a WBC test and shot her out the door. . I was on the phone for an hour with Timmy's mom that night.. . she'll be taking him to another vet, who another puppy buyer of mine goes to in the area.
Vet's like this drive me nuts. .And I've ran into some doozy's in my lifetime. There was the ER internists who, after Grins ran his back off, wanted me to do an additional $1800 worth of tests, from tick panel to leukemia. We knew what was wrong, we knew how it happened, we felt there was no need for those tests, and when asked, he admitted it would not change the course of treatment, so I decided no go on the tests. He accused me of not loving Grins. . .HELLO!?!?!? Well, it's what, 4-5 yrs later, Grins' is alive and healthy, so who was right? I mean, they already got an additional $1800 out of my pocket, what more did they want?
Then there was the a**hole who when I asked him years ago about sighthound sensitivity to anesthesia, that I shouldn't 'worry my pretty little head' over it, it was an old wive's tail. Mister, you might have a degree, but that does NOT give you a right to be condescending towards me.
Unfortunately, many vets have no clue what a healthy sighthound should be. If it doesn't look like a lab, it's not in good weight. I used to disagree with my old vet all the time, cuz he thought my dogs were too thin. We can thank the purina condition chart for that. Wish there was a way to make them create one for sighthounds.
Grrr, so want to go to Boston and smack this vet. . .his mom did ask me about why I waited so long to sell my puppies, and I told her: they go with all their shots, they get more exercise left with their siblings, and it helps them be more civilized, and this last one she said she agreed on. Friends of hers had gotten puppies younger and they were typical hell raising puppies. Timmy's been the perfect puppy, very calm, very sweet. Not a hellion on 4 paws like some 8 wk old puppies can be.

Random vent: Politics
Totally off usual topic, but I need to vent after getting yet another fwded email./
I hate it when people feel the need to share their political views with you, no matter how much you try to hint that you don't want to hear it. . I don't care if you're for Obama or against Obama, he's the president, IMHO, if you're an american, you support him until such time as the next presidential campaign comes along. . .I'd say the same thing if it was McCain and that lunatic up at the white House. IMHO, our government is not working the way it is, change is better. You don't agree, that's fine, you don't see me stuffing my views down your throat, don't stuff yours down your throat.
This has nothing to do with blogs. . .where the poster is entitled to post their opinion. I am so sick of the emails i get from friends, good friends, who I don't want to ruin the friendship of, trashing Obama. Politics and friends just don't mix, not with most people, so please LEAVE It at that. I didn't ask your opinion of his presidency, so please don't stuff it in my face. I kept my political views to myself, hell, I didn't even discuss it with my MOTHER.
I will leave it at this myself. .I didn't vote. Once again, I was left with the thought of the lesser of two evils when looking at the presidential run, neither of them excited me enough to warrant standing out in the pouring, freezing rain in order to vote. . .the only thing I knew for sure was I did not want Palin near the Whitehouse, that woman is a loon and scares me, she needs to go disappear into the big white spanses of the great North . . OTOH, I don't care who's in the office, it's going to take a lot longer than 6 months for any president to pick up the pieces that the previous president(s) left us with.
So, to my friends. .stop sending me political emails. .i'd much rather get your religious spam, than your political spam. . and ya'll know how I stand on religion.
